Hello mathematicians, puzzlers, and other curious people!
Do you need a math class for a junior high student who\’s home for the year? Beginning Mathematical Reasoning is based on the first chapter of Jousting Armadillos & Other Equations, a prealgebra book originally written for 6th graders. Since it\’s prealgebra, anyone up to 8th grade can join the class without being \”behind,\” so 7th and 8th graders are definitely welcome, and I\’ll be happy to have advanced 5th graders in the class as well. If their school last year didn\’t place them into prealgebra this year, that\’s OK — we\’ll do plenty of reviewing.
Live meetings will be 2-3 times a week for about 45 minutes and recorded for students with bandwidth issues or who need to re-watch. I\’m planning two cohorts to accommodate varying schedule needs, 2020-Aug on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:30 Central Time beginning August 17 and 2020-Sept on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 Central Time beginning September 15. After this unit we will continue through the book and supplemental materials to finish out a year\’s study.
\”Afterschoolers\” (students in a conventional school program, taking the classes as an enrichment activity) as well as homeschoolers are welcome in either cohort, since watching videos and participating in asynchronous discussions is an option, but the September cohort\’s meeting time is designed to be compatible with afterschoolers\’ schedules.
Scholarships are available in case paying tuition is an issue, and if you need a different class, please let me know — I still have room in the fall schedule.
Calc You Later!
